Eat more…Basil

      Hello. I’m back. I went missing for a while… I recently had a family member diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Wow. Talk about a reality check. After coming out of the shock from hearing her news I basically submerged myself into researching food, nutrition and pretty much just natural health to boost her immune system and help her through this. My brain was starting to hurt with all this info! Radishes help lower blood pressure, shiitake mushrooms reduce tumor activity, milk thistle protects our liver from strong medications, garlic can slow or even stop cancer growth! I decided I would start writing all of this down instead of just storing it in my over whelmed brain. So I did, on paper. Then I had a duh moment and now I’ve decided that I’m going to start sharing all of that incredible information with you all! Not with the intention that we will all start to run around freaking out about what we put in our bodies rather with the hopes that we will start to think of food as a fuel rather than a filler. Powerful ingredients that were put here to help our bodies thrive. 

       Rather than just completely over whelming us all with an extreme amount of information I thought it would be fun to dive into one herb, veggie, fruit, at a time. Look at all of the health benefits, and the why we should incorporate more of it into our diets and some simple recipes to get us eating more of it.

So…Lets get this show on the road and dive into Basil! So simple to grow and so yummy! Lets see why we should Eat More Basil!  

 Anti inflammatory    Basil contains eugenol, a chemical compound, making basil a powerful anti inflammatory great for inflamed bowel conditions such as colitis, IBS amd crohns as well as rheumatoid arthritis. image

Digestion    Very beneficial for the stomach during digestion helping to ease cramps, indigestion, nausea and relief from gas.

Anti Bacterial    Basil provides protection against unwanted bacterial growth by degrading the bacteria’s cell wall and basically bursting or cell death. Great for cuts, wounds, colds and even acne. Diluted basil essential oil would make a wonderful Veggie and fruit wash against food born illnesses, since even the FDA doesn’t recommend us using those veggie washes. So why not wash them with a veggie! ahem herb.

Blood Circulation    Basil improves cardiovascular health by relaxing muscles and blood vessels improving blood flow. It regulates heart rhythm and decreases cardiovascular spasms.

Kills    Stomach worms and parasites.

Antioxidants    Rich in caratenoids (beta carotene) an antioxidant that protects our cells from free radical damage.

Rich In Vitamins    vitamin K, zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber.

Onward to the recipes!

Basil Tea:

1 C. hot water

3/4 C. packed fresh basil leaves (I used Cinnamon basil)

1 black tea bag

1 orange slice

Steep tea bag and basil in water for about 4 min. Remove tea bag and basil, add orange slice and enjoy!

 

Basil and Avocado pesto, we made this the other night and it was amazing! I reduced the amount of Parmesan and added more basil. Either way its incredible. We not only put this on pasta but we put it on toast, eggs, sandwiches, my kids were using it as a dip!

 

 

This looks amazing! We are a hummus eating family over here.

There you have it..Basil…who knew?! Now you can go about your day eating basil thanking me. Eat more Basil!
